Freedom from Torture and the Turners’ Charity

A letter from the Clerk of the Worshipful Company of Turners:

Dear Turner,

Liveryman Professor Michael Maisey is actively involved with the charity Freedom from Torture. He and the Company’s charity  are joining forces to develop a turning project based on the recycling of timber objects. Proceeds from the sale of these objects will be split equally between a Turners’ Charity and Freedom from Torture.

Dear Liverymen and Freemen
Auction in Support of Freedom from Torture and the Turners’ Charity
Following a proposal from Liveryman Professor Michael Maisey, the Turners’ Charity is joining forces with the charity Freedom from Torture to develop a turning project based on the recycling of timber objects. A good project both for charitable purposes and the environment. All proceeds will be split equally between a Turners’ Charity and Freedom from Torture. It is intended that the Turner’s share will be applied to a new project supporting young people in developing turning skills.

Active turners, both professional and amateur from both within the Company and affiliated organisations will be invited to contribute a turned piece or pieces for the charitable effort. Any preused timber object can be used as source material. Examples might include; old brown furniture (tables, legs etc), timber cupboard doors, wooden carvings, old lawn-bowls balls, wooden curtain rods etc. The timber article will be photographed before working commences and when finished to show the transformation. If there is a shortage of suitable timber objects, Professor Maisey can supply some source material for turners wishing to contribute to the project.

The intention is to invite contributors early in June, with turned pieces finished and delivered (or collected) by September lst, with an exhibition and on-line auction, culminating in a live auction in mid-November, at the Army & Navy Club.

A prize will be offered for the most inventive use of recycled material, to be judged by the Master and
Wardens.

The turning aspects of the project are being coordinated by Liverymen Michael Maisey and Les Thorne.

You can find more information about our Charity at: https://turnersco.com/the-turners-company-charity and about Freedom from Torture at: https://www.freedomfromtorture.org

We sincerely hope that you will find a way to support this project and the two very good causes, either by contributing a turned piece and/or by bidding for (and hopefully) buying a completed piece. If the former, then please contact the Clerk (clerk@turnersco.com) or Professor Maisey (michael@maisey.org.uk).

Yours sincerely

Signed Matthew Gaved (Master) and Paul Logan (Chair, Charity Committee)
